Teahupoo Surfing November 2 2007 (224 photos)
UPDATE: Jon made a video of this surf session.
Watch it here
I had some technical problems with the camera I was using here (aka broken) so the exposure is totally jacked on half of these images. :(
If you know the names of these srufers please comment or tag them. Thx!
Wikipedia:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teahupoo
Teahupo'o (pronounced Cho-pu or Te-ah-hu-po) is a world-renowned surfing location off the south-east of the island of Tahiti, French Polynesia, southern Pacific Ocean. It is known for its heavy, glassy waves, often reaching 2 to 3 m (7 to 10 ft) and higher. It is the site of the annual Billabong Pro Tahiti surf competition, part of the World Championship Tour (WCT) of the ASP World Tour professional surfing circuit and used to be one stop in the World Tour of the International Bodyboarding Association.
Teahupo'o (or 'Chopes as it is sometimes called) is a reef break. It is mainly left-breaking, but the outer reef also creates right breaks that surfers must be cautious of when paddling out. Teahupo'o is also renowned for the consistent number of "barrels" it delivers. It is a rewarding location and is widely regarded as being on the 'must-surf' list of every enthusiastic surfer. However, only experienced surfers in peak physical condition should attempt Teahupo'o; heavy waves combined with a shallow shoreline can result in serious injuries and even death in a wipeout.
Tahitian Thierry Vernaudon claims to be the first to ride Teahupo'o, having done so in 1985 with some other locals. They rode much smaller waves, however, than those often featured in photographs and videos of Teahupo'o. Bodyboarding pioneers Mike Stewart and Ben Severson surfed Teahupo'o in 1986 and it soon became an underground spot for thrill-seeking bodyboarders. Few professional surfers rode Teahupo'o during the early '90s and it was only in 1998, at the Gotcha Tahiti Pro, that Teahupo'o became widely recognized as having some of the heaviest waves in the world.[1] On August 17, 2000 Laird Hamilton is credited with surfing the heaviest wave ever ridden, documented in the film Riding Giants. In 2003 the late Malik Joyeux successfully rode one
of the largest waves ever ridden.
Keala Kennelly was the first woman to tow-surf Teahupo'o in May 2005, getting a 10-foot barrel ahead of the Billabong Tahiti Pro contest.[2]
Jeremie Eloy, Julien Sudrat and Yannick Salmon were the first kitesurfers to ride Teahupo'o in September 14th 2006.

Biminis Fire (30 photos)
tinyurl.com/3d6v57
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - "You can see the smoke rising from the Westside all over town. A popular Vancouver pub, Bimini's Tap House on West 4th, is on fire. It's a three alarm fire, and a big portion of Bimini's roof is still burning.
It's drawing a big crowd at the street level. Fire crews are still busy trying to get in part of the building.
This is a popular gathering place, and a big part of local history, and of the environmental movement. Bimini's pub is considered almost the birthplace of Greenpeace. The founders of the organization originally had a small office across the street.
There is no word yet on what has caused the fire or if there are any injuries. 4th Avenue is blocked between Arbutus and Burrard, and there is still a lot of smoke billowing out over the Westside."

Theme:Take Five to Jive
Throughout the 20th century, succeeding generations of young people have embraced new forms of rhythmic and rebellious music. During the 1930's a positive and optimistic new sound emerged, providing a generation with a means of escape from difficult times.
Let us take you back to a time of ballrooms filled with guys and gals jumping and jiving to the syncopated beat of the big band. Hear the symphonious sounds of warm brass punctuated with energetic drum solos and strutting bass lines. Embrace the romantic, energetic mood that is created.
This sound holds a sentimental place in the memories of those who lived through that era. Flash forward to present day, and you'll find these sounds alive and well. They have found a place in the hearts and minds of today's generation of musicians and music lovers alike.
It is from this great musical movement that we take our inspiration for 'Take Five to Jive'.

Vancouver Sun Run 2007 (75 photos)
A record-breaking 54,317 people revelled in sunny skies as they ran, walked or propelled themselves through downtown streets for Sunday morning's Vancouver Sun Run.
The official registration showed this year's high-energy event, the biggest 10K run in the country, had the highest number of participants in its 23-year history. Participants of all skill levels, including elite athletes, people in wheelchairs, walkers, shufflers and children swept through the city.
Along the main route -- which went down Georgia Street, through to Lagoon Drive, back along Beach Avenue and over the Burrard Bridge before wrapping up in front of BC Place -- live bands busted out tunes ranging from reggae to rock while volunteers and spectators hollered words of encouragement.
It was an incredible experience, said first-time participant Qiang Yang, the consul-general of China in B.C.
"I saw that Vancouver is full of energy -- very active," said Yang, speaking through a translator. "It was fun. I found it very good."
He plans to do it again next year, he said, and will encourage other people to join in.
"I'd like to see more Chinese- Canadians take part in the run," he said. "Next year, I'll ask more consulate members to take part."
There's nothing quite like running along with a pack while a crowd cheers you on, said Vikram Goghari, a third-time Sun Run participant.
"I guess it motivates me to exercise more every year," said Goghari, 29. "It's nice to get cheered on."
The party-like atmosphere is a big part of what appeals to the students of Archbishop O'Leary Catholic high school in Edmonton, said teacher Renee Przyswitt. For the past five years, the school's Grade 11 and 12 students have bused to Vancouver to participate in the run.
She said the event is inspirational for young people.
"It's about teamwork, dedication, fun and it's sociable," Przyswitt said. Her student, Kelly Penner, 17, nodded.
"I was really looking forward to it," said Penner, who completed her run in about 55 minutes. "I thought it was good. You have to push yourself."
Two hours after the 9 a.m. race start, an after-party was well underway inside BC Place.
Hundreds of people with flushed cheeks and satisfied expressions -- dressed in track shoes, sweat pants and race T-shirts -- munched on free bagels and bananas. The 70s tune, We Are Family by Sister Sledge, played overhead.
Jamie Pitblado, official spokesman for the event, said the run gets bigger and better every year.
"I mean, so many people are doing it now. Once you do it, it's contagious," he said. "Maybe people are wising up to the whole issue of obesity. It gets people thinking and setting a fitness goal."
Seventy-three-year-old Paul Russell trained about twice a week for the run. He was a little disappointed by his 52-minute time, though.
"I was hoping to break 50 minutes," he said, grinning and shaking his head. "I overdid it in the first half and didn't have energy to do it after that."
Despite that, he said, it was an enjoyable experience.
"The sun was out," said Russell. "It was great."
And there's always next year.
