Gmail System Status – Gmail down again
by Duncan on March 27, 2007
UPDATE: Google finally has a status page for Gmail here it is:
or view it here.

It’s very annoying when my Gmail goes down…
Gmail status page:
“a percentage of our users seeing ‘Server Errors’ and ‘Oops’ messages when trying to log in to their Gmail accounts. We realize that many of you depend on Gmail to communicate and assure you that all hands are on deck to fix the error. While we do not have an exact time until resolution to offer, this is currently our top priority and we’ll continue to post updates as they become available.”

If gmail creates a listserv to send us important information about service problems with gmail, won’t it be ironic that we can’t read the email notices because we can’t get anything except a “Google Server Error” message whenever we try to reach our gmail account? I think I have too many eggs in this basket.

Hi Google is aware of the problem. This only affects some users. Remember to back up.. I have added a link to a solution on my
GMAIL outage post

You can not open gmail right now. When you select the page it just makes a clicking sound and will not open.

Jeez…Google Mail is just about the most unreliable service I’ve ever used. At least once a week I cannot connect to their IMAP server. And it’s just about impossible to find help or system status…as is the case at this moment.
by Mike on September 16, 2008 at 1:23 pm #
Agreed. The problem, though, is not necessarily the service’s reliability–stuff happens, and we all knew we were subscribing to a cutting-edge, beta service (or did they finally pull Gmail out of beta?). The big problem is Google’s lack of communication–they have no status page, no way of contacting them, no way of reporting an outage, and no admission of fault on their part. I understand that desire from a PR perspective–they like to remain secretive, kind of like Apple likes to do–but my trust in the company is significantly lower because of this. But what do we do–we use the brand anyway because the positives still outweigh the negatives. For now.

Please tell how to get “Recent mails” for Gmail (imap.gmail.com), i tried with NOOP (imap command) but everytime getting “No Recent” mail for Gmail.

Thanks in advance..
by Bhupesh on February 10, 2009 at 4:39 am #
Gmail (imap.gmail.com) is not responding correctly for the NOOP command.
Everytime sending “NO RECENT” if any new mails (recent mails) are there too.
Please suggests anything..for that…
Thanks in advance

I wonder how much Google searches for ‘gmail alternative’ skyrocket when gMail goes down.
I’m fine connecting using IMAP. It’s just weird w/o web interface.

May people like me are dependent on Google mails for very important tasks. If some thing happens like this, people are becoming impatient. Hope google maintenance people will trouble shoot server outage and keep gmail on track..
keep the good work guys……..
by Gopi on September 1, 2009 at 2:19 pm #
Well I have been using gmail since 2005, and I can count the outages that have affected me on one hand. So it is still more reliable than a lot of the alternatives.
Sadly, I have not yet migrated to gears based offline gmail, or else I could still work. This might make me do that. …but I’m not setting up IMAP for one afternoon.
I do agree that Google the company has a big PR problem. They remain silent even when there is a crisis, they give out information but not in an obvious way, and they never seem to have any humans in the building. I’ve been there, I know there are people in the building! They need to hire at least one person to smooth these sorts of things out with the users.

Looks like gmail is back online.
by Duncan on September 1, 2009 at 2:25 pm #
This is on the status page:
“We will provide an update by 1 September 2009 06:30:00 UTC+12 detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change.”
It is 9:29 + 12UTC now. Where is the update. When will things be back online? I have a business to run.

I have no web availability but IMAP & SMTP are working nicely through Thunderbird, despite the pain Gmail is still my best option for portability
