Nerd Firefox Tip

by Duncan on April 1, 2005

Here’s a little tidbit for your inner nerd. Lets say you
wanted to search Google for "nerd firefox tip". With Firefox you can just type
"google nerd firefox tip" in the address bar, hit enter and you’re in
business.

Typing anything into the the Firefox URL bar will retrieve the first Google entry a la “I’m feeling lucky.”

If you go to any search engine’s main page, right-click in the search box and select
“Add a keyword for this search”, you can define a single letter to determine which engine your address bar uses for searching. For example I right-clicked > Add a keyword… in Google’s search box, chose ‘Google’ as a name and ‘g’ as the keyword and clicked ok. I did the same for Altavista (a) and Yahoo (y) so now I just enter ‘g duncan blog’ to get a full page of Google search results on duncan and blog, and I just replace the ‘g’ with ‘a’ or ‘y’ to search with other engines.

You can do the same with any search box; go to the IMDB search box and set up ‘m’ as a prefix for searching the movie dB from the address bar.

Nerds rule!
